19,116. Rolland, L. S. Sept. 21. Welding ; working by electricity.-In a machine for electrically welding wires, cables, hoop-iron, and the like, electrodes 14, 15, Fig. 1, are mounted in, but insulated from, cages 11, 12. The cage 12 is slidable in guides as controlled by a lever 20, spring 25, and stop 22. Dies 16, 17 and caps 61 are grooved to the section of the articles to be welded and hold them with their ends in contact. The dies are interchangeably secured to and form part of the electrodes, and the caps are mounted on rods 59, 60, Fig. 3, sliding through but insulated from the electrodes and connected by a cross-piece 62 having a treadle connexion at 63. The rods are normally raised by a spring to an extent controlled by a stop. The rod 60 has a slotted connexion to the cross-piece to allow for the motion of the cage 12. The primary circuit of the transformer is completed through terminals 69, 70. The terminal 69 is connected to a pivoted lever 71, and is held in contact with the terminal 70 by a spring 73 except when prevented by a lever' 74 or stop 77 which abuts against the end of the slide of the cage 12. In operation, the lever 20 is moved to the left, Fig. 1, allowing the spring 73 to close the circuit. When the metal is sufficiently heated, further movement of the lever 20 upsets the joint to an amount determined by a stop 24 on the cage 12 which abuts against the cage 11. A handle 83 is then operated to traverse a shaft 31 and clutch it to a worm-wheel (not shown) continuously rotated by an electromotor. At the same time the lever 74 is operated to break the welding circuit. The shaft 31 is geared to a shaft 40 and cams on the shafts operate levers 45, 48, connected by a spring 51 and carrying swaging-dies 54, 55. The die-holder 56 is loose frictional fit in the socket 58 and is pressed downwardly by a spring 57.
