Dyeing bleaching; washing.-In rotary cage or cylinder machines for dyeing or treating with liquids wool, cotton, and other loose fibre or material, means are provided for opening the fibre and preventing it from rolling into compact masses. These means consist of V-shaped perforated ribs or prominences c, d, e, extending wholly or partly across the width of each chamber a2, and arranged with their open bases across longitudinal openings b, Figs. 1 and 2. These ribs divide or break up the fibre as the cage rotates so that the liquor in the vat f. which pisses freely through the perforations in the outer shell, in the walls a, in the ends a, and in the ribs c, d, e, can penetrate and affect equally the whole of the fibre. There may also be provided brackets, Fig. 2, adapted to collect a quantity of liquor from the vat f and carry it upward until the rotation of the cage a causes it to flow down upon the fibre in the respective chambers a2. The material is introduced into and removed from the several chambers a2 through openings in the outer shell controlled by hinged doors a3. The inner shell of the cage is preferably made in sections, but may be made or cast in one piece. The compartment comprising the sides or one side and the outer and inner shell may be made in sections, the ends of the chambers consisting of perforated plates a'.
