Levels; clinometers; rulers; squares.-The engineers' tool shown in Fig. 1 is constructed to serve as a rule, straight-edge, square, centre square, angle gauge, level, micrometer gauge, and a drilling and tapping gauge. A graduated straight edge 1 has a plate extension 2, forming a hexagon gauge at 7, a right-angle at 3, and some convenient angle such as sixty degrees at 4. Two pins 5, 6, one fixed and one detachable, on the extension enable the straight edge to be used as an inside or outside centre square. The extension is also perforated to serve as a drilling and tapping gauge. The sliding jaw 13 of the micrometer calliper gauge is adjusted by a micrometer screw 15, journaled in an adjustable block 16, provided with a spring gib 17 and set-screw 18, the sliding jaw also having a gib and set-screw for locking it in position. A spirit level 22 carried by a worm-wheel mounted on the block can be angularly adjusted by a worm provided with a graduated head 28. The pins 5, 6 are applied to the surface to be tested and the level adjusted until horizontal, when the angle can be read off on a scale on the block. When the tool is used as a square or straight-edge, the slide and block are removed.
