25,391. Soo. l'Eclairage Electrique. Dec. 8, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Centrifugal pumps; fans. - Multistage centrifugal pumps for liquids or gases are provided with rotating annular diffusers formed by extending the walls of the impellers l1 beyond the ends of the vanes, in addition to the fixed diffusers. The casing is formed in two parts divided horizontally. The disks d', d2, &c., carrying guide-vanes, and the partitions a', a2, a3, &c. against which these guide vanes bear, are also divided horizontally into two parts, so that the case may easily be opened for inspection and any disk or wheel may be removed if required as shown at g3, a tube i being inserted to carry the fluid to the next stage. When the casing is long, additional support is given to the pump shaft by means of a bearing supported by helicoid ribs k carried by the casing E. The thrust on the shaft is balanced by connecting the annular space behind the last impeller to the suction, the amounts of axial reaction being regulated by means of a cock in the passage. In small pumps, ports communicating with the interior of the impeller are sufficient to balance the end thrust.
