Rivet and bolt -head cutters; percussive handtools; chisels.-A pneumatic or like machine for breaking stay bolts and rivets in locomotive fireboxes during repairs, which is applied to the work by an adjustable hoist connected to a stirrup 49 and link 50, consists of a cylinder 1, to the ends of which are screwed collars 4, 3, the former being bolted to a valve head 7, and the latter to a tool head 28, with copper gaskets 8, 31 and rubber cushioning-washers 9, 32 interposed. The valve head is connected by a port 16 and tube 34 with a port 33 in the tool head, and the tapered plug valve 18 is operated by a hand-lever, the movement of which is governed by a depending extension engaging a segmental recess in the valve body. Air enters at port 15, and, when the valve is in position shown in Fig. 2, passes through ports 19, 20, 16 to the front end of the cylinder to drive back the piston, exhaust at the same time passing through a port 14, groove 22 in the valve, and the exhaust port 17. When the valve is turned until the port 21 comes opposite the port 14, air passes through ports 19, 21, 14 and drives out the piston, exhaust passing through ports 33, 16, groove 22, and the port 17, and also through an exhaust port at other times covered by a valve slid in bevelled guides on the collar 3 by a rod attached to the valve handle.
