Improvements in Hopper Feeders, applicable for Opening, Breaking and Carding Engines.

Feeding openers, carding-engines, &c.-In a hopper feeder for openers, breakers, and carding-engines, of the type in which the amount of fibre or material fed thereto is controlled by a plate or fork swinging or pivoted within the hopper, the belt fork L, by, means of which the feedlattice or feed-roller of a feed trunk or shoot is stopped and started, is moved by a mechanical-. relay apparatus instead of directly by the swing- ing plate &c. This consists of a rocking lever H, mounted on a lever F and actuated by an eccentric or cam J, and having lugs to engage a cat h E also pivoted on the lever F and fixed to a swinging arm E1. The shaft D, on which the swinging plate or fork B is mounted, carries a weighted arm W and a lever C connected to a link G sliding in a bracket G1 and provided with two lags as shown. A displacement of the plate B, due to a shortage or excess of fibrous materials fed to the hopper, causes the lever C to displace, by means of the' lugs, the catch E, which is quickly swung round by the weight E1 into contact with the rocking lever H. The lever F is then moved by the eccentric J and transmits motion to the belt fork L by means of a link K. The belt fork L is pivoted on a stud l and has an horizontal arm projecting into an enclosed slot K2 in a bracket at the end of the link K. By this apparatus a connexion between the lap end of an opener or scutcher and the feed end is rendered unnecessary. If the material is fed under- Death the swinging plate B to the hopper, the drop lever at the lap end is arranged to bring the catch E' into the path of the rocking lever H and stop the supply. By lifting the drop-lever the supply willbe re-started. The mechanism may also be used to control the feed from one hopper to a second hopper.
