7603. Rollin, C. March 29. Elastic-fluid turbines.-A gas turbine is shown in Fig. 1. Both the inner stationary structure A and the outer rotary structure C are built up of disks of fire-clay or other fire-resisting material. The stationary disks are threaded on a steel spindle B, and the outer disks are held together by a number of flanged, steel, casing-rings B bolted together. The centrifugal strains set up by rotation are sustained by this casing. Vane passages T, U, Fig. 6, for the motive fluid are formed in the disks by moulding or cutting. The rotor C is supported by bearings at I, J, K, and the core B is held rigidly at G, G. Air and gas are carried by separate pipes L, M from reservoirs which may be kept filled by pumps worked by the turbine. through the exhaust chamber N to a number of tubes Q, R in the fixed core. These lead to the annular combustion chamber S in which the now highly heated gases mix. Under working conditions, this chamber is red-hot ; ignition takes place and the products of combustion pass into the turbine passages and drive the rotor. Small removable pieces are fitted in the outer walls of the chamber S so that access can be had thereto for starting the firing. Motion may be transmitted to the shaft Y through spur-wheels V, X, or other arrangements may be made.
