A New Automatic Valve or Tap Self-closing, without Concussion.

11,239. Bushell, W. H., and Tomalin, L. R. S. May 14. Self-closing valves; shocks, preventing.-Relates to a valve of a similar construction to that described in Specification No. 2755, A.D. 1871. The conical vulcanite or other valve 8 is enclosed in an inner cylinder 3 which has a number of small perforations at 7. A cup 14 of flexible material is attached to the rear of the valve, and the friction between it and the walls of the cylinder is determined by the water pressure. A small groove in the surface of the cylinder forms a by pass passage to the rear of the cup. The valve is opened by pressure on the stem 9. When this is released, water passing along the by-pass groove allows the cup aud valve to move gradually to the closing position. In place of the cup 14, a rubber or like disk may be used, and, in order to increase the friction in proportion to the water pressure, the disk may be expanded radially by being compressed under the nut 16. A screw 18 may be used to keep the tap open.
