12,295. Chadburn's (Ship) Telegraph Co., and Grant, A. J. May 26. Telegraphs, mechanical.-Consists in a mechanical ships' telegraph of the 'order and reply' type, specially intended for small craft. The transmitter is shown in Fig. 1, and the receiver is similarly constructed. The hand-wheel 4 is secured to the transmitting-shaft 3, which carries a spur-wheel 8 gearing with a second wheel 9 on a spindle 10, to which is also secured the single-toothed wheel 11 of a Geneva-stop motion 11, 12, of which the notched wheel 12 carries the order pointer 5 on a sleeve 13. The reply pointer 6 is actuated by the shafting 7 through a similar motion 15, 16. Each pointer is thus moved one step for each revolution of its actuating-shaft. Intermediate transmitters of the same internal construction, but actuated through bevel-wheels by a hand-wheel above the shafts, may be fitted. Fig. 8 shows a modification adapted for a steering-telegraph, in which the handle 4 operates the order pointer 5 on the shaft 13 through a Geneva stop 11, 12, and the reply shafting, which is preferably in direct connexion with the steering-gear, in a similar manner operates the reply pointer 6, which is mounted on a sleeve 17. The gong mechanism, which is of the single-stroke type, and is stated to be of known construction, is mounted outside the casing of the telegraph instruments.
