Winches.-Comprises an arrangement, construction, and combination of parts of a winch for lifting loads of forage and the like. Two grooved pulleys 3, 5 mounted on the winch axle 2, are provided with spring pawls 9, 12 engaging ratchets on flanges on each side of the hoisting-drum 4 in the same direction. Round the pulley 3 passes a rope 6 drawn out by a draught animal in order to wind up the hoisting-rope 10 and raise the load. The load, when raised to the desired height, is arranged to sound an alarm. The fraction rope is then released and is automatically wound up again on the pulley 3 by a rope 7 connected to a counterweight and wound in the opposite direction upon a pulley integral with the pulley 3. The tendency of the load to run down brings into action the pawl 12 on the brake pulley 5 and the load is sustained. The brake is constituted by a rope 15 fixed at one end and passing several times round the pulley 5 to a weighted lever 16. This lever can be raised by a hand-rope 21, relieving the tension of the rope 15 and releasing the brake, by which the descent of the load may then be controlled.
