Centrifugal governors.-A governor suitable for winding and other engines subject to occasional excessive loads is arranged to open the throttle in the ordinary manner up to normal full load, but above that to continue the opening at a constantly diminishing rate so as to keep the power approximately constant and thus reduce the amount of steam taken from the boiler. To effect this purpose, a spring resistance comes into play as the governor drops below the full-load position. Fig. 1 shows one construction in which the resistance is exerted by spring-pressed studs h1 situated in the governor weights a, the main governor springs not being shown. Fig. 3 shows a modified construction in which the studs h1 are mounted in carriers m pivoted to the weights a and abutting on springs o. The studs h1 are in this example so shaped as to slip off the fixed stops k when the speed falls very low, allowing the throttle to open wide.
