Stamps, ore and like. -The upper die of a stamp for mining purposes has a body A of steel or cast iron with its base shaped for connexion to the head C of chilled iron &c., which is held in position by a shrunk steel ring D. The body may consist of cast iron, poured round strengthening-rods &c. of a stronger metal. The lower die E, which is formed from chilled iron, has a bollow base F, and its striking-bead is surrounded with a steel ring G, applied as in the case of the upper die, or positioned in the mould d before casting, so as to cast the body on to the ring. The ring is used to strengthen the striking-surfaces and prevent the metal from chipping.
