摘要
5103. Hargreaves, H. March 2. Stops for preventing backward movement or excessive speed of railway or tramway vehicles on inclines. A pawl or catch d, made heavier at its lower end, is pivotally supported in a rectangular trough a so as to contact with, and be depressed by the axles of corves or other vehicles passing up the incline. If a vehicle is running in the opposite direction, the pawl is forced against the spring h into a vertical position, where it is held by the spring-pressed stop f. The movement of the pawl into contact with the stop f completes an electric circuit through a signal apparatus. To adapt the apparatus to prevent excessive speed, the pawl is reversed so that the heavy end rests on a ledge e1, and the lighter end lies at an angle of less than 45 degrees to the horizontal. When vehicles moving at normal speed pass over and depress it, it is able to recover itself, but if the speed is excessive, it is moved into a vertical position and arrests the vehicle.
