Nails.-In the reworking of old rails &c. to form sheets, slabs, or strips for use in the manufacture of nails &c. the rails d are flattened in dies a, b prior to being rolled. The dies may be double, as shown, so as to effect the flattening in two stages, and may be fitted with shear-blades to cut the flattened part from the remainder of the rail and to slit such part longitudinally. Distance pieces c determine the thickness of the plate &c.
