16,690. Humphrey, H. A. July 20. Regenerative kilns and furnaces.-In a reversible regenerative system for heating the air and gas supplies to pottery ovens, kilns, or furnaces, the waste products of combustion are first passed through the usual brickfilled air -heating regenerators where their temperature is considerably reduced, and afterwards over a series of metal pipes through which the gas is passed to the furnace. As shown in Fig. 3 applied to a single-chamber down-draught kiln, the products of combustion pass through openings in the floor to an annular flue d, and, in the position of the reversing-valves f, f1 shown, through the regenerator a, over the gas-heating pipes b and out to the chimney flue i through another reversing-valve. Air enters the flue g1, is heated in the regeneratcr a1, and passes into the kiln from an annular flue m through suitable ports. Gas is heated in the pipes band passes into the kiln from the flue q through ports alternating with the air ports. When the valves are reversed, air is heated in the regenerator a and gas in the pipes b1. The reversing-valves f, f1 are connected together and control the air-inlet and exhaust flues, as shown in Fig. 4. The reversing-valve controlling the exit of the products of combustion to the chimney and the entrance of air to the regenerators is of the butterfly type, and is operated simultaneously with the gas reversing-valve. In a modified form, the air-supply flues and reversing- valves are so arranged that the air does not pass over the inoperative gas-heating pipes. In another modification, Fig. 9, the reversing- valves f, f1 are dispensed with, the direction of the gases being reversed in the kiln chamber. As shown, the products of combustion pass out through the ports n' to the flue m1 through the regenerator a and over the gas-heating pipes b. The air is heated in the regenerator a' and passes into the kiln from the flue m2, while the gas from the pipes b is delivered through the pipe p1 and flue q1. When the valves are reversed, the products of combustion pass out through the flue m1, and the air and gas are supplied through the flues m1, q2.
