Extinguishing gas.-A spring or motor actuated drum r, Fig. 5, for operating a gas valve or cock is automatically released at predetermined times by levers o, p operated by clock-work or similar mechanism, the action of the levers being delayed or prevented on certain days by devices driven by the clock-work. When a notch j, Fig. 8, on the boss h of either of two clockwork-driven daywheels c comes opposite a pin k, of semicircular cross-section, on its spindle e, a spiral spring m presses the corresponding lever o and the wheel c laterally and thereby removes the end of the lever from in front of the projection 7, Fig. 5, so that the drum rotates until the projection y on the other lever engages the notch x and allows the end of the lever to come in front of the projection 7. A segmental wheel 9, Fig. 7, on the drum spindle alternately engages one or other of two toothed segments 12 attached to toothed segments 10, 11 engaging with one another, one of the segments 10 having an extension 13 with a forked end 14, Fig. 11, engaging the valve lever. One of the prongs 35 of the forked end 14 may be pivoted, so that it may be moved laterally when operating the valve lever by hand, and the prong is brought to its normal position by an extension 36 striking against the valve lever when the lever 13 is moved, a spring 37 retaining the prong in the normal position. The lateral movement of the lever o under the action of the spring m may be prevented on certain fixed days by a block 32, Fig. 9, on a lever 31 frictionally connected by a spring to the clock-work train, and the spindle e may be rotated by clock-work gearing 16, Fig. 3, engaging a toothed segment 15, so that, while the segment is in engagement with the gearing, the period between successive engagements of the notch j and the pin k is prolonged. The segment 15 may be adjusted relatively to the spindle by a screw 17 and a curved slot 18, and a spring plate normally retains two elements of the gearing 16 in frictional engagement, thereby enabling the segment to be moved back by hand. A spring i, Fig. 8, by frictional contact with the pin k normally prevents the spindle e from rotating. A bracket 39, Fig. 12, carrying the burner is secured on pins in the casing by a hinged notched bar 42 engagiog behind the shoulders of the pins. Pointers on the spindles e. indicate on dials the times of opening and closing of the valve, and a pointer on the spindle 30, Fig. 9, carrying the lever 31 indicates the day on which the apparatus will not act.
