18,058. Hopkins, H. Aug. 8. Typewriters and like machines.-Relates to the application of means for adding, multiplying, and listing numerical items in column form to typewriters which is further described in Specifications Nos. 18,320, 18,321, and 18,322, A.D. 1908, [Abridgment Class Registering &c.], and in particular to the mechanism whereby the typewriter line and lateral spacing arrangements are controlled in order to obtain the desired movements of the forward totalizing-counters. Of these counters there are three placed at intermediate intervals upon a main transverse counter-spindle carried by the paper carriage of the typewriter, whereby the lateral movement of the carriage will bring these counters in turn over the horizontal actuating type and rack-bars, which are positioned by the adding-keys and are reset by the operation of the main handle; a fourth fixed totalizer is placed at the rear and is also adapted to engage with the rack-bars. The writing-keys of the machine move a universal bar 3, Fig. 18, to space the paper carriage 4, Fig. 13, in its ball-bearing tracks, for which purpose pawls 7 operated by the bar engage in an escapement rack 6. Whenever one of four tabulating-keys is depressed, the shouldered upper end 16 thereof lifts a cross bar 13 in order that the escapement pawls may be disengaged and the carriage move to the left until one of the tabulating-stops 17, Fig. 5, strikes the raised end 16 of the key. Tha stops are slidable upon the rod 18 when tilted so that a slot 20 comes opposite the notched scale bar 19 and the lower end is disengaged from the escapement rack ; they may thus be'adjusted to make the columns between the listed figures of the desired width. When a single column of figures is to be listed and added, the carriage escapement may be thrown out of action and the carriage itself maintained stationary by depressing one of the tabu. lating key-bars 15, Figs. 16 and 17, and slipping it laterally under the retaining-catch 26. A lever is also provided for acting directly on the bar 13 and throwing the escapement out of action. Fig. 18 shows the auxiliary universal bar 22 and lever 23, 25 whereby any one of the adding key-levers will depress the rain spacing-bar 3 and move the typewriter carriage with the forward totalizers through one step. Line-spacing is effected either by the usual lever, acting upon the feed-wheel 12 of the platen, or automatically upon the movement of the main operating-handle, which normally depresses a transverse lever 28, Fig. 6, provided with a fork to engage and depress a cross-bar 32 upon the carriage, whence movement is conveyed to the feed-pawl 34. Where, as in cross addition, it is required to register on. the rear totalizer several times in each line of writing, the lever 28 and its operating-member may be disengaged by the arrangement shown in Fig. 6. To permit inspection of the writing, the platen and paper are carried by a subsidiary frame 5 connected by swing- ing links 35 to the main frame of the carriage and resting in front upon pins therein ; from this frame 5 a handle extends forwards so that it may be pulled slightly to the front to disengage it from the feeding-pawl and then swing upwards.
