Tramcar bells. - In electric street cars, the controller is adapted as a switch for an electricallyoperated bell or gong ringing device which will automatically and continuously ring the bell when the car is standing still or running at full speed, unless the motorman presses the handle against the action of a spring 27 or removes the handle, and also when the car is starting and until it has attained a fair rate of speed, or when running with resistance in the motor circuit, and that will ring whenever desired, the current for the circuit being obtained from a battery or from the trolly, with the provision of a cut-out switch 29. A ring-shaped box 6, provided with a recess to fit the stop-post 4, encloses a non-conducting ring 8 secured by two cover rings 9 and containing several contact-makers 13 worked by a lug 11 on the handle 2 against the action of a spring and to make contact with a wire 21 touching a plate 20, to which is secured the circuit wire 22 insulated from the controller and which can be swung free from the wire 21, the other circuit wire 24 being in connexion with the handle. There are no contacts corresponding to the position 'off' as shown in Fig. 1, where the car has attained a fair rate of speed and the motors are in series with no controller :resistance, while the contacts near the 'stop' and full speed' positions are close to the stop-post 4, so that contact is made unless the handle is kept pressed against the spring 27. Contacts are also placed at all intermediate speeds so that the bell rings whenever there is controller resistance in circuit. When the handle is operated by step-by-step movements, lugs 26 are cast on the top plate to indicate the proper steps, and the contacts are preferably placed in line with these.
