Casting; anvils.-Anvils, hammer anvils, or similar articles are cast by the chilled-iron process, in which the chilling or hardening effect is increased at the working face by inserting in the mould pieces of plate, rod, or wire. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the chilling at the face ax, which shows the old form, is increased by the insertion of a plate b held in place by a rod or wire b1. The plate &c. may be suspended by a wire arranged in zigzag form for single hammer heads and may be of any desired shape. According to the Provisional Specification, the process is used for " bits' and other castings.
