When no current is passing, the rod is pulled by the spring j into the position H1, but, when the train starts, the dynamo, which is driven from the wheels, sends current through the circuit, which at first includes all the resistances of the rheostat I. As the speed increases, the wheel-driven governor R pulls the rod down to cut out the resistances gradually.
