Gas and explosive-vapour engines. -The charge is compressed to a high pressure into a combustion chamber 32 forming the common cover of the cylinder and pump, the explosion forcing open a valve 39 leading into the cylinder, which valve serves as a relief valve in case of premature ignition during the in-strokes, when the exhaust valve will be open. The cylinder 20 and pump 21 are, preferably, cast together and are connected to parallel crank shafts 10, 11 beneath them, which are geared together. Three such engines drive one pair of shaft, which are supported between the cranks by bearings. The admission and exhaust valves 39, 43 and an additional exhaust valve 45 for the combustion chamber are worked by cams on a countershaft 50 driven by chain gearing. The admission valve 39 is partly balanced against fluid pressure and is closed by a strong spring 40. The pump valves 33, 37 are automatic. The engine may be worked by coal gas, petroleum, alcohol vapour, &c.
