12,263. Shone, I., and Ault, E. June 5. Ventilating. - T h e contaminated air from pneumatic e j e c t o r s, such as those used in Shone's drainage system, is passed through an expansion vessel to reduce the velocity, and is subsequently filtered. The ejectors are connected by means of a pipe D, Figs. 1 and 2, with a manhole E, into which sewers deliver both sewage and air. The impure air from the ejectors is carried to the vessel G by the pipe F and is exhausted into the man-hole E through the pipe U. This exhaust air together with the air from the sewers is drawn by a fan I into the pipe H, and passes along the pipe J to the space below the grating K. During its passage through the filter, it is washed by water from the spray L, and finally escapes by a pipe M and a ventilating - shaft N into the atmosphere. The water from the spray-producers drains away through a gully trap 0 in the separate manhole P. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the filter is divided into two parts by a wall V. Contaminated air from the sewers is forced by the fan, through the larger part of the grate K and escapes at the top. The exhaust air from the ejectors, after passing through the expansion vessel G, is led along by the pipe U to the smaller part of the grate. The water from this part flows through the trap X, which has a flap valve Y closed by the excess of air pressure caused by the exhaust from the expansion vessel.
