School desks and seats are provided with adjustable standards comprising a lower tubular socket portion c screwthreaded and cut as at c2, and a solid upper portion d which may be cruciform and enters the socket c. The part d is circular in section at its lower end, and is provided with a groove d2 for the reception of balls f and a packing-leather g held in a recessed portion. The part d is locked in position by means of a tapered lock-nut e which engages the screw-threaded portion of the part c.
