9851. Pierpont, F. H., and Lanston Monotype Corporation. April 26. Leading-mechanism for type setting machines controlled by a record-strip. The leads are supported above the entrance to the galley on two horizontal bars A', A2, Fig. 2, carried by a frame A which is so mounted on the machine frame that it can be turned aside when desired. The bar A1 can be adjusted so as to support leads of different lengths. The leads are pressed by a spring- actuated lever D against two vertically-movable slides E, which are undercut so that in their descent they draw down the foremost lead into the galley. The slides E are provided with hooks E3, Fig. 7, which are adapted to be engaged by a latch F, Fig. 4, pivoted to the usual reciprocating galley-rule J. The rule J is provided with a slot into which the lead falls, so that, when the rule rises, the lead is pushed into the galley by the succeeding line of type. During the ascent of the rule, the latch F is caused by a spring F4 to snap over the hooks E3 of the slides E, which are thereby caused to descend with the rule. To enable the leading-device to be thrown out of action, a rod F2, pivoted to the latch F, is adapted to strike an horizontal rod G, which is movable into and out of the path of the rod F'. The latch is thereby rocked during the ascent of the rule J, and fails to engage the hooks E3. The rod G is pressed by a spring against the edge of a disk having alternate shallow and deep notches. The disk is rotated by a ratchet-wheel and pawl actuated by the descent of the die-case when in a certain position, which is determined by a special signal in the record-strip. The same signal thus throws the device alternately into and out of operation. The device may be controlled independently of the die-case by a special movable pin actuated by the signal. The slides E are provided with interchangeable plates E4, Fig. 7, to suit leads of varying thickness. The leads are adjusted so as to ensure their entrance into the galley by a spring-actuated lever, one end of which enters the slot in the rule J and forces the lead against the side wall of the galley.
