21,972. Baxter, J., ,and Clarkson, W. Jan. 9, 1909. Buoys. - In buoys for communicating with sunken submarines by means of a pipe which leads to a winch on the vessel, a siphon pipe with floatcontrolled valve for admitting air to the buoy is provided. In one form, the buoy is also used as a means of escape for the crew. As shown in Fig. 3, the buoy is of double-coned shape and is provided with a float-controlled valve in a siphon tube A' for controlling the ingress of air to the buoy. Air passes from the buoy by means of a flexible tube a2 to a duct b1 and pipe c on a winch C on the submarine. A second duct b2, Fig. 4, may be provided so that fresh air passes to the vessel by one duct and vitiated air escapes by the other. A sleeve B, Fig. 5, encloses the tube a2 at some part within the submarine, and contained in it is a sliding block b3 which is employed to choke the tube in the event of water having access to the. tube. A stop-cock B2 is also provided so that, in the event of the tube a2 being broken, the water is prevented from passing into the vessel. In a modification shown in Fig. 6, the buoy F is adapted to convey men to the surface, suitable manhole doors f being provided, and is normally attached to the vessel by screws f actuated from within the buoy.
