Differential speed indicators with recording- apparatus.-A device for measuring the variation in angular velocity of the shafts of reciprocating engines, by comparing the velocity during a few revolutions with a uniform velocity, consists of a frame A mounted on a handle B and carrying a shaft C, upon which is loosely mounted a heavy wheel c1 formed to engage bevel or friction wheels c5. Loosely mounted on the shaft C is a hollow shaft c2 carrying at one end a light wheel c3 and formed at the other to engage with the pinions c5, which are carried by a wheel c4 revolving freely on the sleeve c2. The shaft c2 and the wheels mounted thereon can be moved to the left by a spring - controlled handle F attached to a bearing E in which the shaft is mounted. In operation, the handle F is depressed to move the pinions c5 out of engagement, and the wheel c1 is pressed into engagement with the fly-wheel to be tested until its velocity is constant. The instrument is then reversed, the wheel c3 brought into engagement with the fly-wheel, and the handle F released. The motion of the wheel c4 is transmitted to a wheel D attached to a recorddrum, and a record is obtained by inserting a pencil in a slot in the drum casing d' and drawing it along; uneven movement is shown by a waved line.
