2293. Brandt, P. Jan. 30. Flexible - chamber pumps.-Relates to hydraulic and pneumatic apparatus comprising bellows chambers, or chambers with flexible walls connecting rigid ends, and consists essentially in improvements upon the known method of increasing the strength of the flexible wall by engirdling the same with annular hoops or rings. According to the invention, annular strengthening - hoops are connected together so as to preserve uniform or substantiallyuniform distances between them during the expansion of the chamber, or they are replaced by helical coils. The invention also comprises improvements in the construction of the hoopstrengthened wall. Fig. 1 shows an hydraulic or pneumatic bellows press, the flexible wall of which is engirdled by metal hoops 6. To keep the distances between the hoops uniform during expansion, the hoops are inter-connected by parallelograms of rods pivoted to each other and to pins 7 fixed to the hoops along vertical lines. The parallelograms may be completed or partial only, numerous examples of a suitable construction being given. The expansion of the chamber is limited by the maximum extension of the parallelograms. If exact uniformity of distances is not essential, the hoops may be connected by wide strips of leather, or by separate chain links coacting with pins arranged along helical lines. One or more helical coils may be used in place of hoops, and they may be parallel or cross each other. The hoops may be of circular, rectangular, T-shape, or of any other desired cross-section. Fig. 13 shows the continuous flexible wall 6 of a press fastened by an adhesive to the hoops 5. Fig. 14 shows a stronger construction, in which flexible strips 6 are fastened by an adhesive to annular disks 5, the fastening being strengthened by clamping-rings 11. Preferably, however, clamping- rings are dispensed with in favour of a large adhesive area. The strips are attached so that in the fully-collapsed position they remain entirely within the disks. Fig. 15 shows a construction with concentric chambers. Fluid is distributed, and its pressure equalized in the chambers, by means of pressure distributors and regulators of the kind described in Specification 20,728/08. As each strip is subjected only to the difference between the pressures on opposite sides thereof, machines of large diameter for high pressures may be readily made on this principle. The bellows may be constructed as a removable part of the apparatus.
