10,311. Stone & Co., J., and Darker, A. H. April 30. Ventilators.-Relates to railway-carriage ventilators of the kind in which a conduit, having a constricted portion, is provided with lateral apertures for admitting pure air to the carriage, while cinders &c. and the rest of the air pass through the conduit. According to the present invention, a duct, having a flaring mouthpiece f, Fig. 5, leads to the inner space g, which is separated from an inner space h by a perforated partition j. At the end of the space g is fitted a chest k having a pointed end l so that cinders are deflected into the side passages m and make their escape at the rear end of the duct. Pure air passes through the perforated screen j into the air-chest k. In a modification, a pair of flaring mouths q, Fig. 10, are provided with perforated sides which enclose an airchest x. Cinder-laden air is deflected through the passage r. The air-chest is provided with a pair of pivoted valves w which automatically prevent through draught and suction. In a somewhat similar construction, the conduit leading to the space to be ventilated is surrounded by a heating or cooling medium. In another form, the air-chest x, Fig. 14, is divided by partitions 41, and the duct is provided with a grid valve 12 so that the ducts 8 may be made both downcast, or one downcast and the other upcast. In further modifications, the underside of the perforated partition 2 is provided with louver or baffle plates to prevent the impact of cinders &c. with the perforated part.
