12,077. Platt Bros. & Co., and Pickford, J. May 22. Mules and twiners.-The object is automatically to tighten the backing-off chain during the outward run and slacken it during the inward run of the carriage. The backing-off snail-plate f is driven through friction mechanism so as to turn in the opposite direction to that of the winding-drum shaft a, the arrangement being such that the friction mechanism slips when the resistance becomes too great. In the arrangement shown, the snail-plate f, which is loose on the tin-roller shaft c, is driven by the spurwheel n, which is loose on the winding-drum shaft a and is driven through a friction disk m, the friction surfaces being pressed together by a spring p. During the outward run, the backing-off chain e is wound up until the friction surfaces slip, and during the inward run, when the winding-drum shaft a is driven in the opposite direction by the winding-on chain, the snail-plate f is rotated so as to allow a portion of the backing-off chain e to hang loose to facilitate the unlocking of the faller.
