Thermo-aluminic and like mixtures.-A soluble slag is obtained in the thermo-aluminic process of extracting metals by running the usual slag into a receptacle containing the alkali metals or their compounds, such as caustic soda; or the reducing-agent used contains more than 50 per cent of alkali metal. The aluminate so formed is dissolved in water, and the solution may be decomposed by carbonic acid to obtain aluminium hydrate for the extraction of aluminium. The metal compounds remaining in the solution may be treated for the extraction of the metal, or may be used again in the smelting process. According to the Provisional Specification, the metals of the alkaline earths may also be used to form an aluminate with the slag.
