18,638. Seddon, E., and Birch, A. Aug. 13. Stop-motions.-In cotton and like combing- machines, the vertically-disposed detector levers a1, a3 carrying the usual funnel guides a are arranged with the preponderance of weight above the pivot a2. Should the sliver fail or break, the lower end a3 of the corresponding lever moves into the path of a corresponding wiper f on a shaft f1, which, in the form shown, is driven by gearing from the calender roller b1 through a clutch g, g1. The member g and pinion b5 of the gearing are slidable on the shaft f1 against the action of a spring h2, and are connected with a rod h, the inclined end h3 of which may lift a rod k. When a guide-lever a1, a3 arrests the shaft f1, the rotation of the pinion b5 forces the clutch member g endways, and moves the rods h, k. The rod k actuates any known belt-shifting gear to stop the machine. Fig. 3 shows the rod k connected to a slotted arm m, a projection m2 on the longitudinally-movable spring-controlled rod of the belt-shifting gear being normally outside the slot. The same stop - mechanism may be employed in connexion with the drawing-rollers that carry forward the whole of the slivers from the various combing-cylinders. A single guidelever receives the slivers, and its wiper shaft is geared to the other wiper shaft f 1. Should any of the slivers fail to reach this guide, the machine is stopped. The choking of a guidefunnel by its sliver or slivers will also have the effect of stopping the machine.
