Engraving.-In facsimile telegraphs, currents resulting from the varying conductivity of the original are led through an electro-magnet which operates a diaphragm carrying an engraving-point, which records upon a surface moving synchronously with the original. In the case of silver or platinum photographs, the varying quantities of reduced metal present, and in the case of carbon prints the varying thickness of the pigment layer, produce variations in the current. Drawings and the like may be executed in insulating-ink on a metal surface, or in lithographic ink transferred on to a tinfoil surface. Intaglio and relief originals, threecolour blocks, or grained or striped pictures may be copied in the same way, the last-named yielding currents of uniform intensity, but varying duration. By using a lithographic transfer for the original, or by reversing the direction of motion of the cylinder of the receiver, an engraved surface may be obtained for printing purposes. Apparatus suitable for the purposes mentioned comprises a rotary cylinder 9 on a threaded spindle 7, with which engages a nut 16 for traversing across the cylinder a carriage 22, which is adapted to receive either a disk 25, Fig. 5, carrying a stylus 26 for transmission, or the parts shown in Fig. 6 for receiving. The latter comprises an electro-magnet operating a diaphragm 28 carrying a cutter 29, which, to prevent lateral movements, projects through a hole in a blade 31.
