Spring gears operating in both directions; slide valves; oscillating valves. - The valve of a pulsator is operated by a piston or diaphragm moved by alternations of a vacuum or compressed air and atmospheric pressure, or variable vacuum acting on one or both sides, the admission being controlled by a slide valve, which is caused to move suddenly by means of springs. The valve 14 Fig. 1 is arranged internally, the rod 12 being concentric with the piston-rod and carrying a frame 13. Wedge-shaped blocks 39, carried by the valve, contact with rollers 41 mounted on the springs 38. The valve casing is in one with the cylinder 2, and the slide valve consists of a cylinder having a passage 28 of which one end is permanently open to the interior and the other moves over the air-inlet and vacuum supply ports 26, 23. The slide-valve may be replaced by a disk 14, Fig. 3, which is moved between stops 49 by spring arms 38, which are carried by the rod 12 screwed to the piston-rod, and operate upon a stud 42 on the disk. The disk is prevented from moving by a rotary stud 44 on the disk which meets the side of the rod 12 but passes through a slot 45, 46 at each end of the stroke. Air is admitted by the passage 26, and vacuum by the passage 23, which are alternately connected to the passage 22 by a port 25 in the valve. The cover 27 is attached by a bayonet joint or by a large screw union surrounding the chamber. If the valve chamber is in one with the cylinder, the plate 33 may form the wall of the chamber and have one aperture to admit air, and a second leading to the suction nozzle, the valve having a single aperture which connects them alternately with the interior. Screws fitted in the casing, and having a spring beneath the milled head, may be used to close the passages 23, 26 partly. The stud 42 may be arranged in a slot carried by the rod 12, being moved by the ends of the slot, and the sudden movement being ensured by a circumferential projection on the disk acting with a spring roller. For the doubleacting piston &c., two valves may be employed, or a single valve with duplicated passages and ports. In the latter case, a single vacuum port may be used connected directly to the pipe or chamber below the pulsator valve.
