Condensers. - Electrolytic condensers, when applied as lightning-arresters, or for other similar purposes in which individual cells are liable to overheating, are provided with automatic means for closing a high-resistance shuntcircuit across any cell that overheats. This means may be thermostatic, for example, the heating of the air in the cell may cause a diaphragm 24 to rise and complete the shunt circuit; or the shunt contact may be completed through a layer of condensed moisture from the overheated cell; or electro-magnetic means, depending for its action on the increase in voltage across the terminals of an overloaded cell, may be provided to complete the shunt circuit.
