Single-type composing and casting machines; moulds. -Low-quad mouldmechanism of the kind described in Specification 18,231/06 is arranged to prevent rupture a n d deformation of the matrices and centring - pin, mechanism other than the centring-pin being provided for sustaining the pressure upon the fulcrum of the cut-off actuating- member of the floating tongs. Fig. 1 shows the die-case 1, die-case lever 5, centring-pin member 6, compression spring 7, collars 8, floating-tongs members 12, 13, and transmitting-lever 15, as described in the above-mentioned Specification. The lever 15 may actuate the lever of the cut-off section of the mould-blade mechanism described in Specification 17,580/09. The outer ends of the tongs-members 12, 13 are connected respectively to frames 25, 26. extensions 27 of the frame 26 being linked to a yoke 28 pivoted on the frame 16x. The frame 25 is movable upon a transmission member 29, which is itself movable in a bearing 31, and has ears 33 normally situated beneath the frame 25. The [ever 15 is connected with the member 29 by means of a rod 36 extending loosely therethrough and provided with adjustable nuts 37*. The rod 36 extends into a casing 37 pivoted to the lever 15, and a spring is interposed between the casing and a head on the rod. Pivoted upon the ends of the levers 12 is an interponent 40 provided with one or more shoulders 41 adapted to enter beneath the shoulders 33 of the member 29 and through a bearing 42, upon which passes a rod 43 attached to the frame 26 and provided with a spring 45. The interponent 40 normally stands in the position shown in Fig. 7 away from the shoulders 33 and remains thus as long as the members 12, 13 of the floating tongs move together. Immediately the outer ends of the tongs-members begin to separate, as when the centring-pin is abnormally arrested by a low-quad matrix having a shallow or no centring-cavity, the interponent swings beneath the shoulders 33 until arrested by a stop 47 on the frame 25, and the subsequent movement of the member 12 is communicated to the member 29, the cut-off section of the mould being thereby actuated. A screw 52 connecting the tongs 12, 13 is arranged to come into contact with an adjustable bearing 48 as soon as the centring-pin has engaged a low-quad matrix, so that the downward pressure of the fulcrum of the member 12 upon the member 13 may not be transmitted to the centring-pin. When the matrix presented to the centring-pin represents a full body type, the shoulder 41 of the interponent 40 is initially raised to such an extent during the tilting of both members 12, 13 that the differential motion subsequently communicated to these members is unable to tilt the interponent into active position beneath the shoulders 33. In order to throw the mould cut-off mechanism out of action, the member 29 is rotated so as to throw its shoulders 33 out of the path of the interponent. A spring-pin 34 engages grooves in the member 29 to hold it in either of its positions. The initial position of the lever 15 may be adjusted by means of the nuts 37* or by the interposition between the nuts and the member 29 of a gauge block 55. The spring in the casing 37 may be used to reinforce the compression spring 7 when dealing with large type. For this purpose the frame 26 is lifted, the yoke 28 engaged by latches 57, and a stop applied to prevent the elevation of the casing 37 and lever 15 ; shoulders 58 on the interponent 40 then co-operate with the member 29.
