Circulating or passing materials through vats and the like. - In apparatus for mercerizing cotton or other vegetable fibre in the roving, sliver, or loose state, the mercerizing-agent is sprayed on to the material while this is passing through the nips of a series of pairs of driven rollers of small diameter arranged close together. The material is preferably carried through the machine by means of aprons 22, 23, 24, 26, 27. The series of rollers 16 may be immersed in a shallow tray of mercerizing-liquid, or the latter may be pumped through sprays 25 from a tank 3 underneath. To stretch the fibres, the rollers 16 may increase slightly in diameter towards the discharging end. The fibres may be passed through the ordinary tanks 2, 4, 5, &c. before and after the mercerizing proper.
