5325. Baeten, H. March 3. Roller mills; mills and apparatus.-Apparatus for crushing and sifting clay &c. comprises two crushing-rolls e, Figs. 1, 3, and 4, one of which is movable to allow hard substances to pass without being ground, an oscillating inclined sieve i with longitudinal wires, and a stationary sieve k with transverse bars between which the wires of a frame or harp q work so as to cut and sift the material. The rolls e are connected by wheels f, f1 and are driven by gearing c, d from the main shaft b. Knives g, h remove the clay from the rollers, one of which is controlled by a weighted semicircular lever y. The crushed material drops on the sieve i, which rests at its lower end on rollers j, and is actuated by eccentrics l on the shaft b. The material which does not pass through the sieve j is received on the sieve k. The frame q is attached to a block s which slides on a rod t coupled to wheels u on axles b2 driven through bevel-wheels v, w from the shaft b. The frame is moved to and fro by rods r attached to a disk r1 on an ovalshaped rack o1, Fig. 5, which is fixed in a case p and driven by a wheel o on a shaft n actuated by bevel-gearing m, m1 from the shaft b. A loose disk o2 on the axle n bears against the inner surface of the case p and keeps the wheel o and rack o1 in gear. The case p moves up and down on ledges on a plate p1 which moves to and fro on top and bottom rails z. A weight p3 carried by a lever fulcrumed on one of the rollers p2 balances the weight of the case p and rods r. The upper end of the frame q is connected to a crank-shaft which is carried by a carriage q1 running on rails s' and is provided with fly-wheels q' to facilitate the vertical movement of the harp q. The sifted clay &c. is received on a conveyer belt x, while the hard and fibrous substances are ejected over the bridges k1 into barrows k2.
