Coating - appliances, hand. - An apparatus for spreading liquid or pasty substances on to surfaces, as, for example, a moving machine belt, consists of a container A having a piston D which serves to express the contents through a slot or a series of holes H on to a roller or brush K, mounted on levers E operated by a handle J so that the roller serves as a valve to close the exit openings. The hollow piston-rod C may be used for filling the container A, or may be used to admit compressed air to the upper side of the piston. According to the Provisional Specification, the roller K may be mounted in fixed bearings.
