Oils, extracting and purifying; fuller's earth. -Oil is recovered from materials that have been used for decolorizing oils by adding salt water, heating to about 85‹ C., adding sulphuric acid, and finally adding sodium carbonate. The operation is effected in an apparatus provided with a steam-coil and with agitators. After the evolution of carbonic acid has ceased, and the agitation has been continued for a short time, the oil is removed from the surface of the mixture. The materials under treatment, namely, hydrosilicates such as fuller's earth, animal charcoal, or mineral black such as powdered coal, undergo a preliminary treatment in a press for the removal of a portion of the oil.
