Fastenings operated mechanically from a distance.-Running longitudinally of a railway carriage is a squared shaft e, which is made circular beneath each door at f to form a pivot for a counterweighted or spring-controlled lever g. To this lever g is jointed a bevelled catch n, which engages a striking-plate c on the door, inclined at d to depress the catch readily when in operative position. The shaft e has a nose h, which, when the shaft is turned, engages a pin k on the lever g and withdraws the catch. The coupling between the carriages is shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the shafts e slide in squared recesses in spring buffers r, s, the buffer s having a squared projection t which engages a squared recess u in the buffer r.
