Branches and mains, connecting; junctionpieces with valves.- Connexions to mains carrying gases, liquids, or vapours under pressure are made without interrupting the service, by means of an apparatus consisting of two parts. The first part comprises a pipe A, with an offset E, both pipe and offset being provided with stuffing- boxes B, F, the former passing a ratchet-operated drill C and the latter a rod H for pressing forward a screw plug G when the drill has been raised after drilling the hole in the main D. The second part comprises a collar K gripping the main, and a screw union J connected to a branch pipe M, the screw union together with the screw plug G constituting a control valve for the branch pipe M. Washers P of leather, indiarubber, lead, or the like are used to secure tightness, and the top of the plug G has a square recess I as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the plug may be screwed home, using the squared shoulder on the drill C as a driver. The socket J, after the plug G has been screwed home and the attachment A removed, is provided with a cap L, Fig. 4, which carries a key N serving to operate the plug in the socket as a valve.
