Ammonium sulphite and sulphate are prepared from coke-oven gases by first separating the ammonia by a continuous shower of water in the washer c, then burning the gases in the oven a, and finally recovering the sulphur oxides in the gases by washing them in the tower f with a continuous spray of the ammoniacal liquor from the tower c. The process avoids the use of an unrenewed stream of liquor circulating continuously between the ammonia washer and the sulphur-oxide absorber.
