Reciprocating or oscillating sieves. - Apparatus to enable ore, coal, &c. to be discharged from ships direct to railway wagons in a riddled condition comprises a portable gantry A1, A2 beneath which the wagons can pass, with an oscillating riddle E suspended by links D3, D4 hinged to the gantry. The riddle extends entirely over one wagon and its ends more or less over the adjacent wagons, and slopes from the middle downwards towards its ends. The gantry comprises top and bottom longitudinal members connected by vertical end members A3, A4, A5, A6, is braced together by diagonals B', B2 and transverse members B3, B4, and runs on wheels C3, C4. The riddle consists of an angle-iron frame carrying side plates E' and cross-members E2 supporting a removable perforated top plate E3. An horizontal grating G' is secured on the gantry above the riddle to break the fall of the material. The riddle is operated by rods J5 from levers J3 on a shaft J1 which is oscillated by an arm J and rod H5 connected to a crank-pin H4 on a wheel H3 gearing with a pinion H2 on the crank-shaft of an internal-combustion engine G2. Material that does not pass through the riddle is received in the adjacent wagons, and the delivery may be facilitated by attendants with rakes.
