Parachutes.- An aerial machine is fitted with a hollow post l to receive in a folded condition a compound parachute which can be projected into action by the release of a spring. A fall is also retarded by sheets i at the side and a central sheet k of fabric each adapted to assume a bell shape. The sheets i in the collapsed condition are supported by network h carried by frames g fixed to the machine frame. The sheet k is provided with a collar m which slides on the post l and is connected by ropes o, o', arranged as shown in Fig. 8, to plates n carried by the sheets i, so that the sheets i, k may be collapsed or extended together either automatically or by hand. Curved strips of steel or whalebone radiating from the plates n assist to maintain the bell shape of the sheets i when extended. The post l contains two parachutes s', s2 arranged on a common stick s which rests upon a spring l1 held in compression by a detent q. When this detent is released the stick is projected out of the tube but is held captive by a cord t. The parachutes s1, s2 are opened by the action of springs s5, s4, s' on collars connected to sets of stretchers s6, s7, s8 respectively. Cords u connect the outer edges of the parachutes.
