Improvement in Processes for Treating a Semi-solid Material in the Containers of Filter Presses and Removing the same therefrom.

Filter-presses.-To facilitate the removal of unfilterable material from the containers of filter-presses, the filtration is conducted intermittently so that cakes are deposited on the cloths in thin layers. The cakes are detached by the pressure of a liquid or gas introduced behind the cloths, and the slime may then be flushed from the containers. Fig. 1 shows a suitable container in cross - section. The material may be introduced through passages I1, O1. The passage A' serves for the discharge of the filtered liquid and for the admission of the pressure fluid behind the cloths. The slime is flushed out through the passage O1 by fluid admitted through a pipe W1 having nozzles N'. When treatment of the slime for metallurgical purposes is desired, a fluid for this purpose may be admitted through the passages I1, O1, or the pipe W', the pressure in the central space being maintained to prevent the cakes from falling away from the cloths. In one modification, the pipe W', which may be rotatable, is placed within the passage O1. As shown in Fig. 5, each container has a gate G, and the pipe W3 is placed outside. The gate may extend across the width of the container so that the slime will fall out without flushing.
