4935. FÚlizat, L. Feb. 27. Carbonizing - a p p aratus. - A furnace for making charcoal from waste material, such as the residuum of olives, nut shells, sawdust, &c., comprises in combination means for automatically feeding the material into the furnace, regulating its descent through the furnace, and automatically and mechanically discharging the finished charcoal. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, hoppers 1 fitted with right and left hand worms deliver into worm-conveyer shafts leading to the furnace. The material then passes successively through combustion, carbonizing, and cooling chambers A, B, C, separated by inclined partitions, which determine the rate of descent, and the finished product, after passing over baffles 18, is removed by a worm 19. Air is admitted at 15, and the combustion products discharge into a flue D. In a modification suitable for lighter material, the uppermost partition 10 is omitted and the other two partitions are replaced by perforated arches, while the baffles 18 are replaced by the stepped inclined bottom of the chamber C. In a third modification, Fig. 5, there is a single chamber A for both combustion, burning, and carbonization, formed with a hopper - shaped bottom leading to the chamber C.
