Overwinding, preventing. - Mechanism for automatically controlling colliery winding- engines so as to prevent overwinding comprises tappet nuts running on a screw driven by the engine and adapted to engage near the end of the wind with governor-controlled arms so as to give an endlong movement to the shaft carrying these arms, such movement serving to apply a steam or other brake. The apparatus is shown in plan in Fig. 2, the engine-driven screw a carrying nuts f with hooked vertical arms which arrive respectively at the outer ends of the screw as the cages approach the stopping-place. A governor k has its sleeve coupled by links to a rock-shaft i carrying arms m which lie in the path of the nuts f unless the engine speed is properly controlled. When either arm m is engaged by the corresponding nut f, the shaft i is moved endways and operates a short lever w to rotate a disk t. Rollers u mounted at the upper and lower parts of the disk t engage cam surfaces on a plate r which is secured to the brake control rod p, the mechanism being so arranged that movement of the shaft i in either direction operates the rod p in the direction required for applying the brake.
