Mantles. - A mantle, closed at one end, is made by forming a piece of fabric in the shape of a development of the mantle surface, rolling the piece to form the mantle, and connecting the meeting edges by a thread, or by sewing, cementing, or otherwise, the fabric being formed at suitable places with contracted meshes or the like so as to give the necessary curvature to the mantle. Fig. 3 shows a piece of fabric before being bent to form the mantle. The meeting edges may be secured together by a thread or the like passing through loops 1, and the base may be closed by drawing another thread through loops 2. The mantle is contracted at the open end 4 by contracting the meshes or otherwise in order that it may be attached to the supporting-ring without folds, and is also formed with a rib 6. The mantle may be made from several pieces, the meeting-edges may be inclined or zigzag instead of vertical, and the mantle may be closed by an inserted piece instead of by the loops.
