24,011. Abbott, E. J. Oct. 30. [Addition to 15,076/09.] Damping - machines. -Relates to the general construction of the machine described in the parent Specification a n d in Specification 24,655/10, and i n - cludes special means for damping envelope flaps and the end stamps of the stamp strip. The envelope feeding and damping slide 11, Fig. 6, is reciprocated by an adjustable connexion from a crank on the driving - shaft, and the connecting - rod is adapted to strike an adjustable stop on a lever, of which one end bears beneath the water well 31 and raises this to bring its absorbent pad 34 into contact with the slide 11. The well 31 is detachably and pivotally mounted on pins 33. Arms 41 pivoted at 42 carry the roller 3, upon which the free eud of the pivoted envelope magazine 2 rests, and these are rocked so that the roller presses the flap of an envelope on to the wet part of the slide 11 as it is being fed from the magazine, and so that the roller is lowered out of contact with the slide during the return movement. The slide raises the roller by depressing the free ends of the arms 41, and a step 44' on a spring-actuated lever 44 pivoted at 45 holds the arms 41 and the roller 3 in the raised position. When an envelope is fed forward, the slide 11 rocks the lever 44, and the roller 3 drops until the arms 41 are supported by a step 4411 on the lever. When a stamp is projected beneath the affixing- plunger 120, Fig. 6, it is moistened 'by a wick 131 in a well 130 carried by a lever 129 pivoted at 1281 to a slide 128. The lever 129 is caused to slide by the envelope-feeding plate 11 contacting, when moving in one direction, with a depending member 137 of the slide 128, and when moving in the opposite direction, with a depending portion of the end of the lever, but before the latter contact is made, the slide 11 engages a roller at the end of the lever to rock the wick 131 into engagement with the stamp, which is supported above by a plate 139 carried by the slide 128 and acted upon by a spring 140.
