Rope grips 1 are provided with long gripping-members 7 cambered at their outer surfaces and also slightly at their inner surfaces so that, on engagement with the rope 6, the members 7 are constrained or bent to secure a more even gripping action. A frame 12 is provided with cross members 10 carrying cams 8, which bear against the gripping-members, and the grip is applied when the frame 12 is moved downwards relative to the gripping - members. Several of these grips with two cams at the top and bottom may be combined to form two long grips actuated by a frame 12 which carries several pairs of cams. The cams may be geared to the members 7 and to the side members of the frame 12, as shown. The members 7 are kept in engagement with the cams by links 14 carrying pins working in slots, as shown. The cams are so shaped that, when forced home, more teeth gear with the grips to take the strain.
